We are often asked about the origins of our name.  “What does The Foehliage mean” and “how is it pronounced,” inquires a guest. The original property was purchased in 2001. The river front location held a small house and a cottage. What is now described as the ‘main house’ was much smaller and over time was expanded in a renovation project.  The river front lot, however, has never changed. It was and remains defined by a canopy of giant oaks.Early in 2000, Gene’s daughter, Erica, regarded the profusion of the predominately oak foliage on the grounds as uniquely beautiful and picturesque.  She creatively made the connection between the magnificence of the foliage with her last name Foehl, pronounced foal, and the name The Foehliage was born.

The original grounds have a four-bedroom main house and three-bedroom cottage overlooking the beautiful Sassafras River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. In June 2017, a second four bedroom cottage adjacent to the original grounds was purchased expanding the facilities and parking.  Whether you wish to use one cottage or the entire site we appreciate your interest and welcome discussing how we may serve you.

Bedroom space can be private or shared. Three rooms have private baths and the balance is shared. Ground level bedrooms are available. Conference space and full service dining will accommodate 16 located in the main house. Since we are first a personal residence we cannot offer an allergen free environment.

If your wish is to relax in a quiet setting enjoying the beauty of nature, the flow of the river and its glorious sunrises and sunsets, we are your destination.

The Foehliage, offered by owner Gene Foehl and his wife Suzanne, welcomes all retreatants. While grounded in the principles of the Christian faith, The Foehliage welcomes all groups interested in the hospitality only an intimate setting can offer. Through its own spiritual non-profit operation it also conducts community enrichment, and youth and church retreats.
